CLIMATE SIGNIFICANCE

It was a Serbian who established the movement of Earth in space and the variability of its orbit around the Sun. Today, the Milankovitch cycles serve as a basis for our climate research. We can safely say that we will owe part of our survival to this bright 19th-century Serbian mind.

Milankovitch’s home turf has an abundance of mountains and rivers, making it an ideal environment for a variety of animals, many of which are protected, including wolves, lynx, bears, foxes and stags. Serbia’s craggy terrain is one of the last ones where bears can roam in full freedom. Unfortunately, climate change has started to impact Serbia’s landscapes and species. With higher temperatures (2008 was the 19th successive hotter-than-normal year) and a significantly drier climate, flora and fauna suffer and delicate ecosystems come under threat.

The Danube, Europe’s second longest river, is the main source of freshwater and a central aspect of the country’s energy autonomy. The Iron Gates dams shared with Romania provide 15% of Serbia’s electricity. Water resources above and underground are one of Serbia’s top natural assets, providing healthy drinking water, fertile lands and tourism revenue.

However, 72% of its electricity is provided by coal power plants. Since 1960, Serbia’s average mean temperature has risen by 0.3°C per decade. Serbia’s climate scientists estimate that precipitation is set to diminish by 20% because of climate change. Agricultural exports constitute more than one-fifth of all Serbia's sales on the world market, which makes these threats all the more significant for the country’s population and economy.

Serbia is not in the European Union (hoping to join by 2025), but has already taken steps to commit to EU legislation regarding climate change by improving institutional capacities and developing its climate reporting infrastructure. Serbia knows the threat and wants to address it so that it can continue to grow as a beautiful and successful nation and member of the international community.

DATA INSIGHTS

According to the World Bank classification, Serbia is an upper middle-income country. To understand Serbia’s position in the fight against climate change, it is useful to observe its history of carbon emissions and exposure to climate risk. The following plots provide an overview of Serbia’s historic CO2 emissions in perspective with global emission levels, as well as the country’s climate action and sustainability performance.
