CLIMATE SIGNIFICANCE

Chad is Sahelian country. The Sahara desert is barely populated, but crisscrossed by nomadic tribal populations. The Sahel strip hosts herders and cattle that move further south as water scarcity grows.

Lake Chad is a very precious ecosystem, particularly in the Sahelian context. It is never more than 10 m deep and half of its surface is small islands, mud banks and outcrops. This hybrid ecosystem hosts a great variety of fish, birds and great mammals, such as rhinos and elephants, that find enough water and food year round.

Lake Chad has dramatically reduced in size from 25,000 km² in 1960 to 2,500 km² today. Africa’s second largest wetland, home of hundreds of bird species, crocodiles, rhinos, hippopotamus and fish could all but disappear in the next 20 years.

Wildlife is at the centre of conservation efforts in Chad. Poaching for ivory and other wildlife trophies, including in national parks, is threatening the country’s fragile biodiversity.

Over the last ten years, the Saharan and Sahelian zones have spread 150 km further south. Chad has been unable to stop this progression, losing grazing lands to sand and forcing herders to retreat to more humid climates. The Sahelian water crisis, which has been ongoing for the last 30 years, has already wreaked havoc in the region, from its western end in Mali to Darfur to the east, where famine, drought and ensuing civil unrest has hindered social and economic development.

Chad’s challenges in many of the sustainable development goals are interconnected. It has decided to focus its efforts on water access and management, literacy and education, and access to clean electricity, all root causes of poverty and underdevelopment. With strong commitments to the sustainable transition, Chad is demonstrating its belief that it can find a way up from climate change and current hardships. We can be part of this transition too.

DATA INSIGHTS

According to the World Bank classification, Chad is a low-income country. Chad’s position in the fight against climate change is better understood in the context of its history of carbon emissions and exposure to climate risk. The graphs provide an overview of Chad’s historic greenhouse gas emissions in perspective with global emission levels and the country’s relative vulnerability and preparedness to climate change.
