CLIMATE SIGNIFICANCE

Compared to many places on Earth,  Belgium is likely to be capable of adapting to the challenges climate change poses. It has the capacity to absorb significant blows and develop the means to minimise negative impacts as they develop. Being strong in relation to other countries does not, however, mean Belgium is safe. Climate change excludes nobody and Belgium has vulnerable sides like every other nation.

The IPCC predicts that major heatwaves will hit Europe every two years towards the end of the century. In 2003, a summer heatwave in Belgium killed 1,300 people. There is also concern that warmer temperatures will mean a changing range of wildlife and associated patterns of disease, like the vector-borne Nile Virus.

With a 67 km stretch of coastline and very low land - the country's other nickname is the flat country - sea level rise is a threat. Belgium is capable of meeting the challenges of climate change. As a developed nation, it still consumes much more than its land can offer and must reduce its excessive levy. Belgium must continue to push the global dialogue on climate change and help lead the way to a sustainable future.

DATA INSIGHTS

Belgium is classified as a high-income country by the World Bank. The history of carbon emissions and exposure to climate risk provides useful insights into Belgium's position in the fight against climate change. The following plots provide an overview of Belgium’s historic greenhouse gas emissions in perspective with global emission levels, as well as the country’s climate action and sustainability performance.
