CLIMATE SIGNIFICANCE

With such varieties in climate, the effects of global warming on Chile are serious and highly varied. Under parameters set by the United Nations, Chile has seven out of nine characteristics that currently define a country as vulnerable to climate change. The most acutely affected are the agriculture and forestry sector; fishing and aquaculture; biodiversity; the availability of water resources to lower rainfall; the energy sector and the response to a future increase in consumption and tourism as vulnerable to changes.

In parts of Chile, average temperatures have risen by as much as 2 degrees Celsius. This increase has been connected with a series of natural disasters that have affected certain regions. Recently, a giant algae bloom, fuelled by unusually warm sea temperatures, wiped out millions of fish, including 20 per cent of Chile’s salmon production. Drought conditions — including the worst wildfires in Chile's history have ripped across the landscape, destroying more than 3701 square km, including large areas of forests, and threatening some of the country's famous vineyards. Already Chile boasts the driest place on earth, the Atacama, but its characteristics are becoming alarmingly widespread.

Chile's government is introducing a range of measures to help the country adapt to hotter, drier conditions. For example, improved water conservation and fire prevention methods, and creating green spaces to help cool urban areas. In terms of the level of preparedness measured by investments and projects to-date, Chile ranks as the highest in South America. Due to its vulnerability, Chile has prepared for some time for increasingly frequent natural phenomena such as earthquakes.

The country has received widespread praise for its efforts to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate, as prevalent earthquakes in the region have encouraged practical and efficient responses, creating numerous natural disaster preventions, which stand out compared with other countries in the region. Cities and urban adaptation planning still remain one of the main present challenges, as urban and natural environments become increasingly blurred along Chile’s narrow interior and coastlines.
