The extremity of human and natural disasters and the poverty they force people to live in present a constant state where basic human rights, justice, and entitlements are threatened. The time has come to initiate a concerted action through broad-based partnerships, accelerated cultural biodiversity conservation, and institutionalize resilience and adaptation processes. These non-governmental initiatives should supplement government initiatives and facilitate local institutions to promote community adaptation.
There are two major components: I) Promotion of resilient livelihood models, and II) Setting up institutional processes for learning, management and sustainability of project interventions.
Promotion of ecosystem-based resiliency models integrated into local lifestyles: A. Landscape & ecosystem-based resource rejuvenation & preventing drought & degradation; agro-ecology development farm based interventions, watersheds stabilisation & crop diversification; B. Lifecycle-based micro-water resource development, water harvesting, conservation, restoration; C. Local biodiversity conservation, forestry in farmland beyond forest, promotion of eco-tourism; D. Adoption of green energy to reducing women’s drudgery & creating opportunity for carbon credit (integrated solar energy centres or commissioning mini-grid, solar home light, fuel-efficient cooking stoves to minimize low emission development strategies); E. Program convergence cross sectors like MGNREGs WASH.
Communities are from coastal and tribal communities affected by disasters in the Bay of Bengal in the Odisha region. The primary beneficiaries are minorities, women, children, the poor and distressed migrants impacted by floods and droughts.
Udyama has been undertaking and facilitating modest attempts in a sustained manner, primarily to restore the networks that can rejuvenate the resource base. Additionally, it empowers the communities searching for alternative means to live with dignity and face the ‘Next Development Challenges’. Communities are assisted in disaster resilient development and adaptation to climate change vulnerabilities through a process of participation, learning and positive action. In addition, Udyama has embraced integrated and convergent action meticulously embedded into the community-led programmes. These actions have the ability to mitigate related issues in education, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and health that have a significant influence on the lives of the poor. – Pradeep Mahapatra, Secretary
